The substantial changes in fertility, mortality, and migration have resulted in new social and economic risks across countries. Many welfare states have been trying to achieve the sustainability of the social policies by pursuing pension reforms, labor market reforms, education, social services, etc.

This special issue of the Istanbul University Journal of Sociology focuses on population and society. It aims to provide a comprehensive literature that reflects the most recent theoretical and empirical studies of the demography and related fields. In addition, this special issue covers not only changes in the population processes, namely fertility, mortality and migration, but also their impacts on social structure, social policies as well as economic reforms. Hence, interrelationships among demographic, social, economic, and environmental factors will be investigated, while simultaneously both Turkish and world population issues will be discussed.

This special issue will focus on, but not limited to, the following topics:

    Population size and population growth
  • Fertility
  • Changes in family structure and household
  • Unions and dissolution
  • Health, diseases, and mortality
  • Population aging and caring and health services
  • Domestic and international migration and refugee issues
  • Urbanization, development, and environmental issues
  • Wellbeing of populations

This special issue welcomes research manuscripts at any scale (local, national, regional, or global) while we particularly prefer cross-national comparative studies. The manuscripts should provide basic social science research criteria, particularly a methodological and theoretical framework.

Articles should be submitted till March 31, 2019 in English through Work submitted for potential inclusion must be a complete manuscript that adheres to the Istanbul University Journal of Sociology’s submission requirements, which may be found on the journal’s official website: For further questions regarding the issue please contact with Ass.
